NEWSLETTER VOLUME 9 NO. 1

First of all, we’d like to wish everyone a happy and successful New Year! We hope you enjoyed the festive season and are ready to get back to work with renewed energy and motivation. In this newsletter, we’ll be discussing the pre-test exams and the national exams, participation in Meet The Marines 2020, the new Women Only Course and the new option to hire the Taus Gym hall. The new year offers us a wonderful opportunity to look back on 2019 and to start 2020 with a fresh perspective. We will, of course, be doing this in close collaboration with you, our members.

The Taus Gym community has grown even larger and stronger in recent years. We are proud of how you are developing within the sport, but also of how you support one another in that development. Our aim, of course, is for everyone to develop resilience, both mentally and physically. This can only happen if we can work on it in a safe environment. We cannot achieve this without the active cooperation of our members. We would therefore like to thank you all for this!

PRE-TEST EXAMS

Are you hoping to sit the Krav Maga exams this year? If so, it’s always a good idea to take part in the pre-test exams. We’ll guide you step by step through all the techniques, and at the end of your “exam” you’ll receive immediate feedback. That way, you’ll know how to prepare yourself further for the actual exam.

The P1 pre-test is open to everyone. The P2 pre-test is only open to those who have achieved P1 or higher, and the P3 pre-test is only open to those who have achieved P2 or higher. During the pre-tests for higher levels, participants have the opportunity to practise freely at their own pace.

All training sessions take place on 26 January. The timetable is as follows:

13:00 – 14:30 P1 (P2 or above may also take part)

14:30 – 16:00 P2 (P3 or above may also take part)

16:00 – 17:00 P3

The cost is €10. Give up You can register for the pre-test exams before Tuesday 14 January.

MEET THE MARINES

This year, too, we want to take up the challenge with a number of Taus Gym athletes and take part in Meet The Marines. In this event, participants must complete missions as a team that challenge them both physically and mentally. These missions are organised and led by the elite of the Dutch armed forces.

The event will last for 24 hours, spread over the days of 23 and 24 May 2020. There are still three places left at a price of €141 per person, so sign up quickly! Once these three tickets have been sold, the price to take part will rise to €161 per person. So sign up now!

WOMEN-ONLY COURSE

The first Women Only Course was a greater success than we could ever have dared to dream. The course will therefore return next year for women who want to learn how to defend themselves in situations they are more likely to encounter. These situations will be simulated in a safe environment, under the guidance of a professional instructor.

The upcoming 9-part Women Only Course will run from 27 January to 30 March. If you’d like to attend a free taster lesson, you can do so on the following days:

6 January: 19:15 – 20:30

13 January: 19:15 – 20:30

MEMBER INTERVIEW

“You’re capable of more than you think, but listen carefully to your own body.”

Name: Nick Verdonk
Age: 32
Which classes do you attend: Krav and Fit?

What do you do in your day-to-day life?
I’ve been working as a façade cleaner and trainee bricklayer at the Orly/Endevoets Group for two and a half years now, and I’m really enjoying it. I also enjoy travelling, going to festivals, or having a games or film night with friends.
Why do you do sport?
To stay fit and become stronger, both physically and mentally.
How does Taus Gym help you achieve those goals?
The training sessions are a good challenge; they always spur me on to go that extra mile.
What is your favourite memory of Taus Gym?
I’d have to say passing my P1 in Krav Maga.
What does sport mean to you, both physically and mentally?
You just feel so much better about yourself after a night of working out at Taus Gym!
Suppose you’re facing a major challenge in the near future – how do you prepare yourself mentally?
Usually, I go for a run to clear my head for a bit. I put some music on and off I go.

What helps you relax?
An evening spent watching a film or a TV series
What skills would you still like to acquire or improve?.
As I’ve already mentioned, I’m an apprentice bricklayer, but there’s still a lot I can learn within my field.
Are you more of a goal-oriented or process-oriented person?
I’m usually quite goal-oriented. I don’t always take the time to follow a whole process, you see.
What’s your motto?
Live fully, die empty
Do you have any fitness and/or health tips that have worked for you and that you’d like to share with the other members?
You’re capable of more than you think, but listen carefully to your own body.
