NEWSLETTER VOLUME 8 NO. 4

After a wonderful, tropical summer, the weather is finally comfortable for sport again. With the cosy autumn and winter months ahead, we thought it was time for another newsletter. This time, we’ll be discussing the upcoming winter outdoor training, the Krav Maga exams and mock exams, the Women Only Krav Maga course and the upcoming holiday timetable. We’d also like to share some news with you about the CIC to host Taus Gym, information about the end-of-year drinks reception and the member interview with Emma!

WINTER OUTDOOR TRAINING FOR CHARITY

Now that the temperatures are dropping again, some people will have seen this coming. On Wednesday 11 December from 7.30 pm to 9.30 pm Taus Gym is once again organising its annual winter outdoor Krav Maga training session. As the title suggests, the session will take place outdoors, after dark. Participants should come in their everyday clothes. This will help us create an environment that is as realistic as possible for practising your self-defence techniques.

The fee for the training is €10. We will donate all profits to the Victim Support Fund. The Victim Support Fund is a non-profit organisation dedicated to supporting victims who have had to endure various traumatic experiences. The aim of the Victim Support Fund is to ensure that, following a traumatic event, people can get their lives back on track and no longer have to feel like victims. As such, the Victim Support Fund is one of the driving forces behind Sexual Violence Centre, Victim Guide, VICTIMS project, TrafVic and they are supporting a major international investigation into victims of child pornography.

Register before 1 December via the contact page.

CIC at Taus Gym

We are honoured to be hosting the IKMF CIC (Civilian Instructor Course). During this course, around 20 prospective Krav Maga instructors will be trained at our venue to become Krav Maga instructors by the GIT (Global Instructor Team). These are the highest-ranking Krav Maga experts in the world. This intensive course lasts a total of 23 days, spread over three blocks in November, December and January.

To make this possible, we need to free up some space in our timetable. All evening classes will continue as normal during this period; only the Sunday classes will be cancelled. For an up-to-date timetable, please check the calendar.

The CIC course will take place on the following dates:

  • CIC Part 1: Saturday 2 November – Sunday 10 November
  • CIC Part 2: Saturday 7 December – Sunday 15 December
  • CIC Part 3: Saturday 18 January – Sunday 22 January

WOMEN-ONLY COURSE

Women often face a different kind of violence in their daily lives. Taus Gym believes in a world where everyone should be able to feel safe on the streets. For this reason, we have put together a unique 9-week course in which women learn effective self-defence techniques. For more information about the course, visit our blog.

The Women Only Krav Maga course takes place every Monday from 21 October to 16 December (from 7.15 pm to 8.30 pm). Register via the contact page.

MEMBER INTERVIEW

“I’m working towards a goal, but it always takes a while. That’s because I like to leave room for change.”

Name: Emma de Wolff

Age: 17

Which classes do you attend: Krav Maga and FIT punching bag training

What do you get up to in your day-to-day life? (work/leisure)

During the week, I’m at school. I’m currently in Year 5 of HAVO, my final year, so it’s quite busy. I also spend a lot of time studying after school. In my spare time, I enjoy walking, reading and writing. I sometimes go mountain biking, but not very often. At the weekend, I work at Bobbejaanland in the catering department.

Why do you do sport?

I’d like to be a bit fitter, of course, but I exercise with the aim of gaining more self-confidence and daring to do more.

How does Taus Gym help you achieve those goals?

It motivates me to keep going when things get tough, and by the end of a training session I realise that I can do it after all. That makes me feel more confident.

What is your favourite memory of Taus Gym?

I really enjoyed the end-of-year drinks party and the BBQ, because that’s where I really got to know everyone. I also had lots of lovely moments with other members during the training sessions.

What does sport mean to you, both physically and mentally?

Physically, it’s mainly about getting stronger. I like knowing that I’ve got some strength despite my height. Mentally, for me, it’s mainly about perseverance. Sometimes I find it hard to keep going.

Suppose you’re facing a major challenge in the near future – how do you prepare yourself mentally?

I usually practise by setting myself a sort of practice challenge. For example, before a test at school, I’ll do a practice test beforehand to see if I can do it. If it turns out I can do it, I leave it at that. It’s important to keep practising, but I used to have a tendency to overdo it, and that often led to things going wrong.

What helps you relax?

Walking, writing and reading. Basically, anything that gives me time to think about problems or events.

What skills would you still like to acquire or improve?.

I’m quite shy and don’t really dare to ask questions or strike up a conversation. I’d like to work on that, but I know it might take a while.

Are you more of a goal-oriented or process-oriented person? Please explain.

I’m more of a process-oriented person. I do work towards a goal, but it always takes a while. That’s because I like to leave room for change. I also like to take the time to think about the next few steps.

What’s your motto?

The greatest achievement in life is doing something you don’t think you’re capable of.

Do you have any fitness and/or health tips that have worked for you and that you’d like to share with the other members?

Drink plenty of water and keep going once you’ve got started 🙂
