COLUMN BY DIETITIAN MEREL COENDERS

Intern at Gewoon Diëtetiek
My name is Isis van der Velden and I am currently studying the MBO course ‘Sustainable Living Environment Adviser’ at Yuverta in Tilburg.

I’m doing an internship at Gewoon Diëtetiek because I’m specialising in lifestyle as part of my degree and I want to learn more about nutrition and health.

This article is about the food footprint; I have chosen to write about this topic because it is often covered at school and because it is very important for our future.

What is your food footprint?
It’s good to eat healthily, but eating sustainably is also important. By looking at your food footprint, you can find out whether you’re a sustainable eater. In this article, you’ll learn what the food footprint means, why it’s important, and how you can reduce your food footprint.

CALCULATE YOUR FOOD FOOTPRINT

The Earth consists of land and water. The land is used for agriculture to grow food for people. Every person uses a part of this space on Earth. At present, people are using too much of the Earth’s surface, with the result that the Earth can no longer recover in time to continue providing us with food. If the world’s population is divided by the Earth’s surface area, this gives an estimate of how much land is available. Based on a fair distribution per person, only 0.9 hectares of agricultural land is available. On average, a Dutch person uses 1.6 hectares of agricultural land. This is more than is available and causes damage to the environment.

Reducing your food footprint can help create a more sustainable future for our planet. Reducing your food footprint helps to reduce the strain on natural resources, such as water and land. By reducing our food footprint, we can cut emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases, which helps to combat climate change.

There are various ways in which you can make your diet more sustainable. For example, by eating less meat and dairy. Dairy products have a larger carbon footprint than plant-based foods.

It’s also a good idea to buy local and seasonal produce. These products often have a lower environmental impact as they require less energy for transport. Make sure you don’t waste food, but store it instead, so that it can be eaten the following day, for example.

Now that you know what the food footprint means, you’ll no doubt want to find out how big your food footprint is! On the Nutrition Centre’s website (Food Footprint – Netherlands Nutrition Centre) you can take a quiz and find out exactly how many hectares of farmland you use. Below are some tips to help you reduce your food footprint!
