NEWSLETTER VOLUME 8 NO. 1

Hello everyone!

We hope you all had a lovely festive season and are ready for a sporty new year! 2018 was a fantastic year, with the opening of our new venue. It was a year in which we were able to share some wonderful moments with our members and also welcome lots of new members.  This year, too, we’re going to make it a cracking year with lots of returning and new activities! We hope everyone feels at home at Taus Gym again this year and we look forward to seeing you at one of our classes!

TIMETABLE CHANGES
We have a few changes to the timetable for the new year. Please always check the calendar from the website for the latest lesson times.

The FIT500 will be a FIT circuit training session on Thursdays
The times for the beginners’ and advanced Krav Maga classes on Wednesdays have been swapped

PAUL: THE NEW TRAINEE INSTRUCTOR
Paul is our new trainee instructor. He has been practising Krav Maga for over five years, three of which were at Taus Gym, and he is also the father of three children, one of whom also takes part in our kids’ Krav Maga classes. Paul will be assisting with the classes in the coming period, and we’re delighted to have this fantastic new addition to our team.

CLOTHING WHEN EXERCISING
It is important to wear suitable clothing when exercising. In Krav Maga, this means wearing trousers made of sturdy material without zips or other hard or sharp edges, as these could injure yourself or someone else. Clothes made of thin material can tear easily, and you can get caught on loose-fitting shirts. We recommend purchasing suitable Krav Maga clothing, such as the shirts and trousers from the IKMF. For FIT sessions, too, try to choose clothing made from sturdy material that is neither too loose nor too tight. Occasionally, outdoor shoes are worn indoors. This can cause dirt from the street to end up on the floor, where participants regularly lie or sit. For hygiene reasons, we would therefore like to emphasise that only indoor shoes are permitted, and we ask that you only put these on once inside.

Take a look here all the clothing and other training equipment we sell.

MEMBERS’ INTERVIEW!

Title: Taus Gym is a challenge for me

Name: Eva Broers

Age: 28

Member since: October 2018

Which classes do you attend: Krav Maga

  • What do you do in your day-to-day life?

In my day-to-day life, I’m working on my PhD research, which involves studying lifestyle changes in people with cardiovascular disease. I also work as a psychologist in a care home. In my spare time, I enjoy going to concerts and festivals or having a drink with friends. I also enjoy reading and drawing.

  • Where does your interest in sport come from?

I’ve been doing sport all my life; it’s not as if that interest stems from any particular source.

  • What sort of sports have you played?

I played football for a long time. I’ve always really enjoyed skateboarding too. In recent years, I’ve started to take it a bit easier and now do yoga and gym workouts. And, of course, I’ve recently taken up Krav Maga ?.

  • What do you look for in a sport?

Sport is mainly a mental outlet. It’s also nice to keep fit. My job involves a lot of sitting, and without exercise, I wouldn’t get any exercise at all and I’d never achieve that summer body.

  • What does sport mean to you, both physically and mentally?

Physically, I feel more energetic. Mentally, it helps me clear my head so that, at that moment, I don’t have to worry about anything other than the exercise itself.

  • What was your first experience of Krav Maga?

Through a friend of mine. She asked if I’d like to go along for a trial lesson. I’d never heard of Krav Maga before and had never been interested in combat or self-defence sports. But the fact that it challenges both the body and the mind really appealed to me. Krav Maga forces me to reflect on myself, and I like that.

  • Why did you choose TG?

It just happened to come my way.

  • What are your fitness goals at TG?

To feel more at ease in situations where I have to stand up for myself. To stick to my own boundaries and not let them be dictated by someone else.

  • What goals have you already achieved at TG?

To fend someone off and hit them without feeling guilty about it.

  • What was the most memorable experience you’ve had at TG?

The realisation that you’re allowed to use absolutely anything to defend yourself, including your teeth.

  • How do you balance exercise with your work and social life?

Take friends with you to your workouts and schedule (and stick to!) your training times.

  • Do you have any fitness and/or health tips that have worked for you and that you’d like to share with the other members?

I’ve stopped eating meat since last summer. Not only is this much better for your body (it reduces the risk of illness), but it also allows you to make a real difference to the environment and animal welfare. Since then, I’ve been feeling much better and have more energy. I’d definitely recommend it to everyone.
