Summer 2023 Newsletter

Click here for the kids & teens newsletter.

The sun is starting to shine again and temperatures are rising – summer is in full swing once more! We hope you’re enjoying the lovely weather and the energy it brings.

In this newsletter, we’ll be bringing you up to date on the upcoming events and training sessions at our gym, including the exams and preparations for them, the new round of the Women Only course, the members’ BBQ and the outdoor training sessions. We also have some important updates and news for you.

Outdoor training sessions

With the lovely weather on the horizon, we’ll have more opportunities to train outdoors! This gives you the chance to develop your skills in a more realistic environment. Discover how training in the fresh air isn’t just good for you, but is also simply great fun!

During the period from 1 July to 31 September We may be able to train outdoors. We’ll decide on the day whether we’ll be training indoors or outdoors. This will depend on the weather and the activities planned for that day. So, during this period, please bring both your outdoor and indoor trainers, as well as a spare set of clothes, as you may get wet during the session.

In Breda, a number of dates are scheduled, as shown opposite, on which we will definitely be training outdoors. This is because the hall is not available during the summer holidays.

New Women-Only Krav Maga course

We are delighted to announce that we will soon be launching a new series of the Women Only course. Through this course, we aim to give women the opportunity to engage with self-defence and Krav Maga in a powerful way. Over the course of nine sessions, you’ll learn how to deal with situations that women frequently encounter, including those involving sexual harassment.

You’ll take this inspiring course alongside other motivated women, under the guidance of our experienced instructors. Together, we’ll create a safe and friendly environment where everyone can train comfortably.

The course will take place from 18 September to 20 November 2023 at our premises in Tilburg, at Professor Romeinstraat 11a. Classes will always be held on Mondays from 8.15 pm to 9.15 pm.

Let me introduce you to: Emma de Wolff

Most of you will have seen me at the Krav Maga training sessions at some point, but for those of you who don’t know me yet, I’ll introduce myself and explain how I came to be featured in this newsletter.

To make sure that half the newsletter isn’t just about me, I’ve written a short piece for now. Of course, I’d love to share much more with you about myself and what I hope to achieve. That’s why I’d like to direct you to the longer version, which you can here can be found.

My name is Emma and I’m 20 years old. I started doing Krav Maga in the adults’ class when I’d just turned 16. When I first joined, I was someone who had absolutely no passion for sport and was quite insecure. Since then, I’ve grown enormously in terms of resilience and self-confidence.

Perhaps a few of you have already noticed, but I’ve recently started doing some different things at the gym. I’m currently working on various behind-the-scenes tasks at Taus Gym, and I’d like to play a bigger part, so if you’ve got any good ideas, please do let me know!

As well as that, I’ve developed other ambitions beyond simply training and taking exams. I’m actually on my way to starting to teach classes and undertaking the instructor training course. At the moment, I’m assisting with the kids’, youth and Women Only Krav Maga classes in both Tilburg and Breda.

I’m also planning to take part in Meet the Marines again next year. I took part last year as well and really enjoyed it. If you’d like to find out more about this, please read the blog Find out more about the 24H Meet the Marines Experience – and who knows, maybe you’ll be joining our team next year.

I’d also, of course, like to attend as many classes as possible, as well as the other events that are being organised. You’ll also see me at the upcoming members’ BBQ on 23 September. I hope to see you all there, and if not, I’ll see you back in class.

IKMF uniform

To ensure you have suitable training clothing, we’d like to draw your attention to the IKMF uniform. We wear the uniform during Krav Maga classes so that we can train safely with one another. As we have a lot of physical contact and carry out intensive exercises, it’s important that we wear the right clothing for this.

By wearing the IKMF uniform during lessons, we foster a sense of unity and promote equality. The kit is also made from sturdy material, making it practical for our training sessions. We’ve noticed that some members often wear loose-fitting clothing, which can tear easily or even be dangerous during training. That’s why it’s essential to wear the right kit.

The black cotton IKMF T-shirts have recently been restocked, so if you don’t yet have the full kit, we recommend that you purchase it.

Please feel free to ask us for advice on clothing via the contact form

You can find more information about the requirements here.

Grappling

Grappling is a dynamic martial art that focuses on wrestling, grappling and ground control. It provides essential self-defence skills and develops your mental resilience.

As well as broadening your ground fighting skills, these classes are also a great workout. They engage almost every muscle group in your body and help you build strength, stamina and flexibility.

Curious? Take a look the Grappling page For further information.

These training courses are delivered by Marcel. He has many years’ experience in grappling and is on hand to help you train at your level.

Would you like to try a few classes for free? Now’s your chance to find out what grappling can do for you. On the following dates, you can join in the classes regardless of your membership status.

Column by dietitian Merel Coenders

With these high temperatures, it’s important to find ways to cool down, including through food.

That’s why, in this newsletter, I’m sharing my green smoothie recipe, made with frozen spinach and blueberries. The advantage of frozen fruit and vegetables is that they’re frozen soon after being harvested. This means they retain far more of their vitamins and minerals than fresh produce. What’s more, they’re often cheaper and have a longer shelf life. Time to stock up the freezer!

Green smoothie recipe

The recipe below makes 2 smoothies.

What you’ll need:

  • A powerful blender or hand blender.

Ingredients:

  • 150 g frozen spinach
  • 50 g frozen blueberries
  • 1 ripe banana
  • 1 green kiwi (with the skin on, if you like, for extra fibre)
  • 300 ml unsweetened soya milk

Method:

  • Cut the banana and kiwi into pieces. For extra fibre, you can leave the skin on the kiwi.
  • Put the fruit, spinach and soya milk into the blender or a tall jug (if using a hand blender). Blend until you have a smooth smoothie.
  • Divide the smoothie between 2 glasses. If you like, top with hemp seeds, linseeds or chia seeds.

Enjoy your meal!
