COLUMN BY DIETITIAN MEREL COENDERS

Resistance

It’s gradually getting colder and wetter outside. As a result, we tend to spend more time indoors, where viruses and other pathogens spread more easily.

So it’s particularly important to boost your immune system during these months.

A healthy diet can help with this, as it provides all the nutrients you need for a properly functioning immune system. So make sure you have a healthy foundation:

  • Eat plenty of fruit and vegetables
  • Choose wholemeal products
  • Eat (plant-based) dairy products every day
  • Eat a handful of unsalted nuts every day
  • Make sure you drink enough fluids

Your gut plays a key role in your immune system. 70% of your immune system begins in the large intestine. This is where the gut bacteria, the intestinal epithelial layer and the intestinal mucosa are found. All three help to identify intruders and keep them out. The gut bacteria also help with the growth and division of immune cells. They ensure that there are enough immune cells available to fight off the pathogen.

It is therefore important to look after your gut properly. You can do this by feeding the good bacteria, thereby stimulating their growth and activity. This helps you maintain a healthy balance and leaves no room in the gut for bad bacteria. Dietary fibre is the food source for gut bacteria. It is found in plant-based foods: vegetables, fruit, wholemeal products, pulses and nuts. Make sure you include these foods in your daily diet as much as possible.
